About 40,000 vehicles fires take place every year in France through technical malfunction or malicious acts. This phenomenon is constantly increasing.
These fires emit large amounts of smoke and usually toxic combustion products such as acids, PAHs, PCDD/F, halogenated compounds such as flame retardants, etc.
In this study, vehicle fires were reproduced to determine pollutant emission factors. Combustible material fires in vehicles were also characterised to determine their contribution to the emission factors of the burnt vehicles. A comparison with other published data was also conducted.
These data will be soon be taken into account in the National Emissions Inventory.
