Ex-Factory Protocol and Certification for Detection-Shutdown On Demand Systems (SDOD)
Evaluation of the performance of Detection-Shutdown On Demand Systems (SDOD) for Wind Turbines
Présentation
This study is part of the “SDA+ program” launched in early 2025 by ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) and OFB (French Office for Biodiversity) in order to prepare an operational process for characterizing the performance of SDOD (Shut Down on Demand Devices) when they leave the factory and once they are installed in wind farms, in order to provide reliable, consistent data for comparison and to assist wind farm operators in their choice of these systems. The program consists of the following tasks:
- Working with professionals to develop a voluntary assessment and certification process for the performance of factory-fresh SDOD systems, regardless of the environmental context of the final installation.
- Prefigure an experiment of this evaluation and certification process on several test sites.
- Compare the best possible methods for assessing the performance of SDOD once installed in wind farms, then agree with stakeholders on a standardized protocol for conducting a national campaign to evaluate their performance with a view to building an initial national abacus.
This report supports mission 1: it proposes a process for certifying the performance of Shutdown Down On Demand systems (SDOD) at the factory. Performance is defined as the combined detection/classification probability that the system will detect a target bird species or class before a certain distance.
The process includes:
- Defining the objectives of the evaluation
- Test conditions
- The operating protocol for evaluating one or more SDOD systems in the field
- The method for storing and processing data
- A specific protocol for analysing false positives
- The procedures for implementing certification
