The purpose of this document is to provide the updated 2018 data on packaging waste generated and recycled, as well as recycling and recovery rates for the year 2018 according to the Packaging Waste Directive. Directive 94/62/EC sets out the European Union's rules on managing packaging and packaging waste in order to harmonise national measures concerning the management of packaging and packaging waste, and to improve the quality of the environment by preventing and reducing the impact of packaging and packaging waste on the environment. Directive (EU) 2018/852, amending Directive 94/62/EC, lays down measures aimed at preventing the production of packaging waste and at reusing packaging, at recycling and other forms of recovering packaging waste in order to contribute to the transition towards a circular economy. For this purpose, Directive 94/62/EC amended sets out the recycling targets per packaging materials (ferrous metals, aluminium, wood, paper and cardboard, plastic and glass) to Member States. These Member States must take the necessary measures to meet recycling targets, and provide annually all information and elements of calculation, subject of this report, in order to fulfil the requirements of this Packaging Waste Directive.
