More than two years ago, ADEME launched several major studies aimed at measuring the performance of heat pumps under real-world conditions over a complete heating season.

The campaign took measurements from a total of ninety air source heat pumps and ten ground source (water-to-water or ground-to-water) heat pumps recently installed in detached houses to replace existing gas or fuel-oil boilers. Data was collected for a full year.
A study of heating consumption by households with air source heat pumps installed to partly or completely replace existing heating systems
Laboratory tests.

The results of these studies show that the average performance of heat pumps is very good, even in poorly insulated homes, although one-third of them could perform better due to problems related to their installation and adjustment.

This in-depth work led to the drafting of this ADEME position paper.
