State of the art on the production of chemical molecules from wood in France

Présentation

The uses of wood dedicated to chemistry are discrete in comparison with those devoted to energy, and consume limited volumes of feedstocks. However, they respond to specific needs as well as they create value. Some of the concerned industries are old while others are emerging or developing. The current environment of the sector is unstable, in terms of cost and availability of fossil resources as well as in terms of regulations and policy decisions, which are under the influence of various scientific and societal debates (non-food uses of agricultural products, indirect land use change impact, forest carbon sequestration balance, etc.). Wood chemistry presents a set of potential opportunities in which the success will depend not only on the technological advances in the production processes and the optimization of the costs management but also on the implementation of regulations and of public policy incentives.
