Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2018/896, establishing the methodology for calculating the annual consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags and amending Decision 2005/270/EC, requires Member States to calculate and report their data on the annual consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags within their territory.
This report thus presents the estimate of the annual quantity, for the year 2023, of lightweight plastic carrier bags consumed in France, which has been reported to the European Commission in accordance with the amended Decision 2005/270/EC. The purpose of this reporting is to monitor Member States’ performance against the reduction requirement set out in Directive (EU) 2015/720.
Indeed, Directive (EU) 2015/720, amending Directive 94/62/EC concerning the reduction of the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags (wall thickness below 50 microns), requires Member States to take measures to sustainably reduce the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags within their territory. These measures are intended to ensure that a certain number of lightweight plastic carrier bags per person per year, or an equivalent target by weight, is not exceeded.
