This study covers a selection of 20 digital devices: fixed and mobile devices, network equipment and equipment used in data centres. A review of the literature and a series of interviews enabled us to establish the material composition of this equipment for a selection of 25 metals. This study also maps the upstream value chains for these metals used in equipment for the digital sector and what happens at the end of the equipment's life (collection, sorting, recycling) downstream of the value chains.
Finally, a forward-looking analysis estimates the quantities of metals that will be used in the digital sector in France by 2030 and 2050, based on the prospective analyses of the ADEME/Arcep study, Evaluation de l'impact environnemental du numérique en France et analyse prospective ("Evaluation of the environmental impact of digital technology in France and forward-looking analysis").
Specific information on metals and equipment is presented in a set of fact sheets attached to this report. This report presents the context of the study, the methodology used to compile the information in the fact sheets, and an overall analysis of the results of the study (use of metals in the digital sector, treatment of metals at the end of equipment life, forward-looking analysis).
