European benchmark of the batteries and accumulators EPR scheme

European benchmark of the batteries and accumulators EPR scheme

Methods for determining the average unit weights of portable batteries and accumulators. Management of used electric mobility batteries

Présentation

The Batteries and Accumulators (BA) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme is one of the first European EPR schemes, established in Europe in 1991. Several Member States have fulfilled the targets set by the Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and accumulators, and waste batteries and accumulators. The new European Battery Regulation currently being negotiated between the European Commission, Parliament, and European Council, which repeals the latter, is about to set new ambitious targets, particularly in terms of collection rates and management of mobility batteries. ADEME conducted a benchmark concerning the management of this scheme in the various Member States of the European Union, focusing on two points: The methods for calculating the average unit weights of portable batteries and accumulators, which influence the calculation of the EU collection rate. The management of batteries used for light and heavy electric mobility.
