International benchmark study and cost analysis of automated vacuum waste collection projects. Synthesis

Présentation

Already widely developed in the Nordic countries or in Spain, the automated vacuum waste collection technology is still emerging in France where it raises a growing interest by local authorities. Accordingly, a dozen French projects were launched recently, and four pilot projects in the Paris region benefited from a financial support from ADEME as an operation of demonstration. If the societal benefits of this technology make no doubt (improvement of the living-environment, reduction of truck traffic and pollutant emissions, less noise and malodor...), its high investment costs and energy intensiveness raise some questions : What are the average investment and operating costs of recent vacuum-waste collection systems deployed in other European countries ? What are the main drivers for optimizing costs ? What are the advantages of this technology in terms of waste collection results ? These are some of the issues that this international benchmarking study attempts to address. The lessons learned from projects based in more experienced countries such as Sweden or Spain could help fostering a proper development of this technology in France.
