Environment themed funds invest in companies that have a positive environmental impact (i.e. those active in water, energy and waste management). These funds have been available in Europe for several decades, but they really took off between 2006 and 2008 when green industries and renewable energies expanded considerably, helped by government subsidies. However, from 2009 to 2012, these activities - which require substantial debt and capital - were hit hard by the financial crisis, the collapse of the green bubble and the reduction in subsidies.
