This work underscores how much is at stake and the effort required to attain the ambitious objectives set by French legislation to address climate change, and the need to inflect public policy in the short term. This Energy-Climate Vision affirms that it is possible to massively reduce, in the 2050 time frame, both final energy consumption, by 45% compared to 2010, and greenhouse gas emissions, with a reduction of more than 70% compared to 1990. All energy supply considered, renewable energy could represent between 46% and 69% of final energy demand in 2050.
This realistic multi-energy scenario, covering all energy needs in France (heat, electricity, liquid and solid fuels and combustibles) is supported by numerous technical and sectoral studies carried out within the past four years. The period envisioned in this projection will be decisive for the energy transition. Despite the uncertainty that is inherent to this type of exercise, this work will advance thinking to drive a proactive strategy that will enable France to rein in its energy consumption, lower CO2 emissions and develop renewable energy.
